Watch the literary pioneer lecture "Not by Bread Alone or Choice" delivered by Dr Anne Lee Tzu Pheng at SWF 2017.
In the accompanying book, Aaron wrote these affectionate words of tribute about an eminent poet he regards as a mentor: "I encountered Lee Tzu Pheng's poetry for the first time while a law undergraduate at NUS in the early 1990s. My writerly sensibilities then were entirely informed by the poetry of the Anglophone West I had read in literature class. In the NUS central library I discovered poetry books by a handful of Singaporeans. Dr Lee's poetry captivated me from the start: it was lyrical yet spare; insightful, nuanced and even spiritual. That year I plucked up the courage to ask her to read my poems. She offered important advice and encouragement that made it possible to publish my first collection of poems the year I graduated."
